The U10 Protec Vipers stormed to an 18-1 victory today playing a 1-4-1 formation for the first time this season. Discipline and keeping our shape led to a great team performance and well executed attempt at the new formation.

In the first half, Cristano volunteered in goal. In the first 5 minutes of the game the Vipers were playing positively, attacking and defending as a unit, Elliot at the base of the midfield diamond played the ball out to Joe S who cut inside and finished decisively with his first attempt on goal. The Vipers second goal came after a free kick was awarded for a foul on Joe a few yards outside the right edge of the box, Tyler converted the free kick with a low drive. Sam made some positive runs down the left wing beating his opponent with several shots on target and successful crosses, but was unfortunate not to score when the ball hit the cross bar and was collected by the keeper on his line. The third goal came after a great run from Cruz on the left wing, which was met by Joe S in the box.
After two substitutions Zac on the right side of the diamond and Iain as a forward play resumed. Zac had several positive runs down the right side of the pitch before providing a dangerous cross, with Tyler providing the finish for the Vipers 4th goal. Percival Youth then gained some momentum and over the next 5 mins increased their possession causing Protec to sit deeper, keeping our shape and some great communication between Sam, Elliot, Tyler and Charlie.Whilst defending the resulting corner, a high cross whipped in from the left evaded all players and snuck in at the back post high up in the top corner. Reducing the lead to 4-1 Vipers.

The Vipers continued to press and after many attempts by Percival to clear their box Zac shot on the half volley from the top of the box with a clean strike beating the keeper in the top right corner providing the Vipers with a 5-1 lead.

We continued to push forward looking for our next goal, but Percival put up a resilient display at the back. Cruz managed to win back possession with a battling display in the middle to assist Iain who shot low with his left foot to the bottom left corner making it 6-1. Over the next 5 minutes Charlie and Elliot broke down some dangerous counter attracts and calmly played out through the wings and the centre midfielder. Cruz continued to battle in midfield and created his own opportunity resulting in a goal from the edge of the box. On the next attack Cruz then turned provider and Zac met his cross at the back post to head the ball home, the first half finished 8-1.

The second half started with players rotating positions wishin the 1-4-1 formation and Iain took his turn in goal. After several very good patterns of play, the Vipers were finding it difficult to beat the keeper, also hitting both posts and the cross bar early in the second half. Zac and Cruz linked well with Cruz providing a delicate ball inside for Zac to finish and make it 9-1. Joe S then became provider for Cruz to finish an inviting cross from the right wing. Again cutting in from the right Joe S made it 11-1 after weaving his way into the box and finishing his individual effort. The 12th goal came after Elliot broke down the opponents counter attack drove into their half and shot from distance, which took the goal keeper unawares and crept in at the bottom right corner.

After more substitutions made and a rotation of roles for some players a run down the right wing to beat his player and then a cross pulled back in the box for one of 3 Viper players arriving in the box led to a tap in by Cristano and the team’s 13th goal. As the second half continued with Percival pushing forward, Iain made two saves and Sam swept up any danger playing as the holding defender. We lost our diamond shape temporarily which meant we had to defend deep into our half. In a swift move from defence to attack Cristano made it 14-1 with a shot just inside the box. Cristano then struck again after Joe S and Cristano played a neat triangle¬† from the right wing and a great bit of individual skill lead to goal 15.

With the clock ticking down we regained our positional awareness and the Vipers managed 3 more goal, another run from Cruz down the left wing and a cross that was met by Joe S at the back post with a brave header. Joe S and Cristiano then combined again for the 17th goal with a 1-2 and a Joe S pull back to Tyler who finished this move off with a low placed shot down to the left. Several more attempts were had on goal with Sam making a bursting run from the back with cover being provided by Elliot and Cristano. The 18th goal came after Cristiano played a through ball to Tyler who provided a composed finish.

Some very minor points to work on over the next few weeks like the diamond making sure they are in their positions quicker and the wingers keeping the opposition outside and showing them the wing where possible on the counter attack, slowing play down and remembering who goes to screen the situation and blocking the dangerous ball.

Although the game finished 18-1, the overall team display, adaptation to the new formation, discipline, communication, patterns of play, continuing to play our way out under pressure, the positive attitude and support for each other was the stand out points for me today. The boys should be very proud of themselves and each other after that stunning performance.

That is 2 wins in their first 2 league games.
